Screaming Fastcore Interviews Geir Pedersen (Adhesive / The Indecision Alarm)

Ok dudes, the main band of this legend is so respected and loved by all of the skatepunk community, that no introduction is needed. Recently, the one and only Geir Pedersen (Adhesive bassist and vocalist), sat down with us, and talked about band's reunion experience, side projects, tour anecdotes, and many more... So, let's begin!

👉 Introduction:

Name: Geir Pedersen
Birthdate: August 26, 1973
Bands: Adhesive / The Indecision Alarm
Instrument: Bass and Vocals

👉 Music influencies:

Which are your main music influences?Obviously, a lot of Californian punk bands, giving the style of music I played, but I also enjoy some good old classic punk like The Clash and such.

Which are your fav bands and music genders nowadays?
I still listen a lot to the old melodic punk, but I also enjoy the old country song now and then, and a lot of other stuff too. I would say that punk is the main course, though. There are too many bands to mention – you would need a book for that!

Do you know any punk bands from Latin America?
Sadly, not that many. I know that there are a lot of bands doing their thing, but I am really not educated at all. Sorry.

👉 Knowing the artist:

What can you tell us about Geir Pedersen that people wouldn't know?
Oh, good question – I think there are many things, but I'm pretty uninteresting, I would say. I am a regular guy with a family, doing family things besides working full time.

What do you do apart from playing bass?
I work, I spend time with the family, and I guess I am some kind of soccer dad, with my two sons playing.

What's your favorite food?

What are your most treasured memories from all these years of punk rock?
Oh, too many things to list. I have had the opportunity to travel around the world, I've met a lot of awesome people that I try to keep in touch with. Being in a touring punk band is a really good way to meet people and get to see things that a normal tourist won't. The people and the general feeling of being a part of this awesome scene is what I will remember.

What was the difference between Adhesive reunion tour with the first years of the band?
The reunion was a little more organized and comfortable, ha ha! Our early years of playing were more of a struggle to build some kind of reputation and “name” for ourselves. We didn't have to care about that stuff with the reunion. Just play and have fun.

👉 Knowing the band:

Do you consider Adhesive a band that should be playing still?
On one hand, I wouldn't mind being in a band, if you just think about playing nice shows and meeting interesting people. It's the other stuff with a band that I don't really enjoy that much. It's very time consuming, whether it might be practicing, doing promotion, travelling or things like that. Having a family and a full time job doesn't go to well with playing in a touring band. If practice wasn't necessary, and if you could teleport to shows, then it might have been different.

How do you see Adhesive in the punk scene after all these years?
I knew there was some interest in us – we have had some nice offers over the years to do stuff, but it never felt right. When we eventually did the reunion, I was happy to see that we had a strong fanbase with both old and new fans. That was very inspiring to me.

How is the relationship with bigger bands from Sweden and the rest of the world?
We have been away for too long, so I wouldn't say we know that many bands that you might say are big. We have good relations to the bands we have met over the years, I think. I am happy that there still are Swedish punks kicking ass out there, to mention a few, like Satanic Surfers, Venerea, No Fun At All or Millencolin.

👉 Curiosities:

Why did Adhesive stop playing shows and recording music?
Our record deal was for three records, and if we were to get a new deal, we had to step it up a notch with promoting ourselves, do more touring and stuff. We always had jobs and things going on besides the band, and we were fortunate enough to have a label that accepted that. But we felt that we couldn't commit to taking it to a bigger level – it wouldn't have been fair to us or a label signing us. We didn't want to have music as a job.

Have you seen the price of Adhesive CDs on the internet? What do you think about it?
Yes, I have. I think it's really horrible, but there isn’t much we can do about it.

What was The Indecision Alarm project about? How did it happen?
Three of the Adhesive guys (me, Micke, and Mathias) wanted to dust off the old bones and try to create some nice music just for the fun of it. We brought in a friend, Niklas to play second guitar, and wrote some nice tunes. I guess you could say it's not too far away from the Adhesive landscape, but it also has a little more mature touch to it.

Did you guys tour outside Sweden with The Indecision Alarm?
Yes, we did some shows across Europe. Two tours and some weekenders.

👉 Band plans:

How did the idea of playing back again happen?
While being drunk around Christmas, I think. We talked about trying to do something with the band, to give it a proper goodbye, and ended in doing a year or so with touring, and donating all profits to charity. We collected about 15000 Euros to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières.

Have you guys considered doing it again? Will you?
No, we said we would do this reunion, and then it's over.

Any new music soon? Do you guys still rehearse together and do new music?
Not as Adhesive.

Have you thought about starting a new band maybe?
You never know in the future, it's not that we started hating music when we quit, it's just that it's too hard to find the time when you have jobs and families.

👉 Touring:

How was the experience of coming back to shows and traveling around Europe and eastern Canada once again?
It was fantastic! We got to play a lot of our favourite places, and also played places we never thought would happen. Japan, for example. I am also very happy that we could come back to Quebec once again. I really enjoyed doing a proper European tour, and also got to return to Spain for a full tour.

Did you expect such a feedback from fans?
Not really. I didn't expect that we would be ignored, but I never thought we would have such a good response and so many people at some shows.

What do you prefer, big festival or small venues?
Small venues are the best, but I can enjoy a festival show, too. Generally the smaller venues are more energetic and crazy, but I can also appreciate a festival, with the organization and the logistics. That's me being old!

Did you know Adhesive has all those fans from Latin America?
I get a lot of messages from South and Latin America, and our Spotify stats say that we have a lot of listeners there. I'm really happy that you like our little band from the other side of the world!

Were you ever contacted to tour South America? Would you do it?
I tried to talk to, I think, two different agencies there. The problem for us was that we could only play there if we paid for it ourselves. We might have had the chance to get a support slot for some bigger band, but since we did the reunion for charity, we couldn't do it. If we would have had guarantees that covered the trip, it might have been a different situation, but we didn’t want to use charity money for plane tickets. I would have loved to come over, but unfortunately, the money just wasn't there.

👉 Message to the fans:

Do you know the site Screaming Fastcore?
Yes, I follow it on Facebook.

What's your opinion about sharing music online?
Hard to stop, right? It's good for the exposure, I guess, but not too good for smaller bands that don't do arena tours? I don't really bother that much with the sharing subject.

Do you think the music industry hasn't adapted to the changes?
Hard to say, since I am mostly a consumer of music. I guess streaming services have gotten some hold of the changing consumer patterns, but considering the amounts paid to the artists, I guess the industry at least adapted to the economy part.

What message would you like to send to the Latin American and rest of the world fans?
Thanks for your support! It means a lot on cold winter nights! Sorry we couldn't make it to all of you – we tried our best! Take care, and support your local punk scene!

Scott Sellers (Mega Post & Full Discography)

Scott Sellers is a musician, singer and music producer from Rancho Cucamonga, California. He was born on September 5th, 1982 and started his music career with Rufio at 17-18, approximately.
Well, beside the insane fast beats, I've always been a lover of two things on skatepunk, basically: great vocal melodies and good technical performance on music.
All Scott's projects have both features and many more to offer! It's the perfect mix between the catchiness of pop punk vocals/lyrics and the shredness of heavy metal strings. His music is emotive, honest and full of energy.
That's why I felt encouraged to review his entire musical career (known to date), through this post. So, here we go, fellas!

💥 Rufio

Rufio is by far, the most well-known music act of Sellers. There's a bunch of Rufio's bios on the web, so I prefer giving you the original version, exactly as was on (now dead) Rufio's website, back in 2001.
Once upon a time, there was 2 guys that were sick of sitting at home, wishing they were in a band. A good band at that. One of them said "Hey, lets try some people out to play drums for us." The other one said "we should huh!?" so they went out on a long journey, to find the missing piece of the pie. They tried and treid, but no one could cut it! Just when they thought there was no hope, one of them said "Mike is the best in the town! I wonder if he will play with us for a while!" The next day, the 2 little boys went to micheals house. "hey mike, wanna play with us for a while"...mike thought for a moment and said "Sure, ill play for a while" so with that, it all began. "The Band" practiced and practiced, but still, something was missing. "I think we need a lead guitar player" said the 3 little boys. So again, they went on a quest to find a lead guitarist. Finally after searching and searching, they found gool ol' Clark! Clark was the hessian metal-head who turned on his race!(the metal-heads) finally "the band" was a band! Then one day, another little boy came along and said "you should be called RUFIO"...the 4 little boys agreed that RUFIO was the name they have been searching they became a band yatta yatta enough with the story bull...i was just bored i guess...boredom ey?
👉 Line-up evolution

Scott Sellers - Vocals/Guitar (2000-2015)
Clark Domae - Guitar (2000-2006 / 2010-2012 / 2015)
Jon Berry - Bass (2000-2006)
Mike Jimenez - Drums (2000-2006 / 2015)

Jeremy Binion - Guitar (2007)
Nathan Walker - Drums (2007)
Terry Stirling Jr. - Drums (2010- 2012)
Taylor Albaugh - Bass (2010-2012 / 2015)

Rufio was active since 2000, till they disbanded for the first time, between 2006-2007. With new bassist and drummer, they were back together in 2010, until their definitive break up, in July, 2012. After that, the band only played a reunion show on June 20, 2015 at the Montebello Amnesia Rockfest in Canada.

• "Don't You (Forget About Me)", originally by Simple Minds. - Punk Goes 80's (2005).

👉 Previous, following and side projects

Before being part of Rufio, Jon Berry was the former bassist of melodic punk band, Sick Of Change. He only played with them on their demo and 1999 album, "In Our Time Of Need". After leaving Rufio, Berry became part of  power pop act, Runner Runner.
Since Mike Jimenez left Rufio, citing creative differences, he joins to an indie rock band, called Science Fiction Theater.
On the other hand, Sellers and Clark Domae started a new band, called BigCity (the one in the photo). According to MySpace, BigCity released an EP or album, titled "The Quest For Power" in 2008. Sadly, I couldn't find it anywhere on the web. I don't even know what genre they used to play...

💥 Mercy Street

After Rufio's final breaking up, in 2012; Sellers kept jamming out along with Rufio's latest bassist, Taylor Albaugh, so they created a new project, called Mercy Street.
The band released their debut EP during the same year, and two years later, in 2014, their only full-length album, titled "Let Me Live". Amazing songwriting and a very Rufio-esque sound on both releases.

Mercy Street - Mercy Street EP (2012) - V0 (Bandcamp)
Mercy Street - Let Me Live (2014) - V0 (Bandcamp)
No physical editions of these two releases.

💥 Scott Sellers

Well, I don't know exactly when Scott started working out on his solo project. Around 2011-2012, maybe?
If there's something that I admire about Sellers, that's his huge creativity, it's such he's always writing new songs and surprising us with great stuff. As happened in 2018, year which our boy delighted us with 3 albums as a solo artist, in the same year.
He stays unstoppable this 2019. He's already released an album, titled "Being Strange" last February, and he's currently working on a new record. Keep it up, Scotty!

Scott Sellers - Garage Sessions (2012) - V0 (Bandcamp)
This 5-song demo was up for free download on Scott's Bandcamp page. For some reason, it was deleted a couple years ago.
Scott Sellers - The Judge (2018) - V0 (Bandcamp)
Self-released on 12" vinyl by Scott (107 pressed).
Scott Sellers - The Jitters (2018) - V0 (Bandcamp)
Released only digitally.
Scott Sellers - Strings (2018) - V0 (Bandcamp)
Released only digitally.
Scott Sellers - Being Strange (2019) - 320
Latest Sellers' record. Released on CD via Punk & Disorderly Records and on 12" vinyl via Orange Whip Records (250 pressed).
Scott Sellers - Soundcloud Demos (Unofficial) (2013-2018) - 128
These 19 demo songs, were shared one by one during 5 years, on Scott's Soundcloud profile. Many of these songs were re-recorded and used on Sellers' 2018 albums. Once Scott released "The Judge", all demo songs were deleted, then he started uploading only official versions.

Scott Sellers - Facebook Demos (Unofficial) (2019) - 256
These 11 demo tracks, were shared one by one on Scott's personal Facebook profile (as videos) during this year. There are 2 covers, one for MxPx's "Your Problem My Emergency " and other one for NUFAN's "Life Size Mirror". The leftover 9 songs, remains un-named to date. It's very probable that several of them be re-recorded and used on future Sellers' works.
Scott Sellers (Guest Vocals) - 320
Scott did vocals collaborations for some skatepunk groups, around the world. These are the songs:
• "Tiempo De Volver" for Ecuadorian melodic punk band, Billy Meier. - Tiempo De Volver EP (2012).
• "When We Were Young" for Dutch pop punk act, The Lost Boys Club. - So Far So Good (2013).
• "No Regrets" for Russian tech-skatepunk band, Void Zero Mess. - For People Who I'll Never Forget (2013).

Much The Same - Everything Is Fine (Review)

Much The Same born in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois in the end of the 20th century (1999) by the hand of the frontman and main vocalist Chris McGrath, the band is known as a precursor and one of the most influence band that made a twist and evolve the genre punk rock into melodic hardcore, under the name of Don’t Look Back, two years later they change their name to Much The Same due a legal problem with another band, one year later the band release their first production EP titled Caught Off Guard (2001), two years later become a more mature album with their first debut album Quitters Never Win (2003), the classic melodic punk rock has evolved into the melodic hardcore style.
After three years of the release of their first full length album, become the release of their second full length album Survive (2006), this album is to date one of the greatest albums ever released, one year later of the release of the second album (2007), the band announced their break-up and the wish from the fans for a third album has gone. Six years has passed since the release of Survive and the legacy and the influence that Much The Same make, impact in many bands across the world induce the release for a tribute to the band (2012), featured by great bands like Jet Market, Symphony Of Distraction, Counterpunch, Adrenalized, Bedtime For Charlie, Curbside, Straightline and many more.
After the success of the tribute album, soon after something unexpected happen, it took nine years but finally Much The Same release some kind of new material, a cover song by Lagwagon Making Friends, for a tribute compilation for Fat Wreck Chords bands (2015), after this the fans all around the word ask if this can be a little sign of hope for have new album of Much The Same in the near future, in this same year Much The Same return to the stages only to perform shows and finally announces that a new album of the band comes in the next years.
After many months of speculations and delay, the last album and third one full length production of Much The Same is finally here, Everything Is Fine (2019), comes as the shortest album, featured with nine powerfull melodic hardcore songs full of insane solos with amazing riffs and of course the melodic and melancholic lyrics performed with the great vocals, with many musical and root influences of their last two full albums Quitters Never Win and Survive.

Burner take place as the first song and with an powerfull opening thanks to the energy of the execution of the drums, nice opening song and well performs that marks the official return of Much The Same, great riff for the intro and the mystical return of the vocals by Chris McGrath a lot of memories comes back with this song that enters as a new style redefining of you hear in Quitters Never Win album.

Snake In The Grass
The first single released by the band to announce the new album, performed as a slower song compared with the opening song Burner, again don’t expect hard influences and root musical technical issues by Survive, and a natural evolution that marks all the album is the voice of Chris McGrath, nice bass solos in the most end of the song works as preparation to a nice outro joined with awesome drums and guitars notes.

You Used To Have A Garden
With a brief intro, this second single released for Everything Is Fine is one of the saddest songs in the whole album, the same musical notes of Snake In The Grass, but this song has something that no one other have the melodic vocals style shared with nice instrumentals, with some backgrounds filled with nice drums solos joined with nice guitar melodies. This song has some support back vocals moments that makes this song especial in the entire album.

Another song load with many emotional musical notes almost like in the same line as the last song of the album, again the voice of Gunnar grabs the song from the begin to the end in the same level of harmony, maybe the first one weak song in the album, not bad at all because the song opens with a nice solo instrumental performance, is the other parts of the song with weak points.

Man Of Science, Man Of Faith
One of the most impressive songs is Man Of Science Man Of Faith, for first to notice the 8-bit intro with those riffs and solos performed by the guitars and the bass shared with a powerfull and discrete drums notes makes of this song one of the best ones and finally end with an awesome solo.

The style of the vocals and the form as the song is sing by Gunnar reminds me a lot of that style of Survive, beyond the sing lapses you can hear a well rhythm executed by the drums, a discrete in may times the guitars and bass melodies but in the end again appears to perform some amazing notes.

Strangers In Fiction
Great instrumental intro and continue with a constant great level with the execution of specially of the drums with synchronized notes across the vocals, perform note by note behind the song and goes with some parts with great solo implement, the most emotionally song, Strangers In Fiction has the best solos and guitar riffs that any song in this album, one of the most technically song with the level of any Survive song.

In The Event Of...
A totally mistake this song and the explanation is that when you have too few songs in the album and you use one to perform a totally acoustic song is like a deception left behind great well worked album with many songs with many different harmonies and melodic notes, the song is not bad at all, the only problem is the kind of song put in the worst place and moment, it can be put as a interlude for the whole album.

After the mistake of In The Event Of… we have without doubt the best song of the album the most influenced song by the style of the masterpiece Survive, you can hear high notes and deep vocals notes open the song and continues with awesome explosives instrumental execution by the drums, awesome guitars and bass, the well execution in the vocals in the whole song is impressive and in the end part of the song have a great epic ending.

Everything Is Fine marks the return of one of the best bands of melodic hardcore not as perfect as we can hear in Survive masterpiece album but this album is in the same quality level as their first debut album Quitters Never Win and the songs are in the same influenced style of this last album, only two songs are in the instrumental roots of Survive like Passengers, Burner, Man Of Science Man Of Faith, and Strangers In Fiction, as the best 4 songs in the whole album. Mention the short of the album only nine songs and of them acoustic break the rhythm and the style of the album in the past songs, so the last song saves the album from this mistake, the great Passengers song. Maybe Everything Is Fine is not the best return and album for many Much The Same fans but is for sure that this album is one of the best albums of this year.

Final Score: ★★★★✩
