Slick Shoes (Mega Post & Full Discography)

Slick Shoes are close to release new music since almost 15 years! Well, here I share a mega post with all their stuff and all info I know about the band. Enjoy it!

👉 The beginning

Slick Shoes is a poppy skatepunk band from Antelope Valley, California formed in late 1994 from the ashes of the local band Today's Special, reuniting guitarist Jackson Mould with drummer Joe Nixon. Over the next year, the duo worked at writing songs before recruiting bassist Jeremiah Brown. Jackson initially assumed vocal duties,
until they met Ryan, who was Jackson's girlfriend's little brother. With the addition of then 14-year-old frontman Ryan Kepke, the Slick Shoes line up was complete, and within two weeks, the band signed to the Tooth & Nail label to issue their self-titled 1997 debut EP. Their line-up suffered many changes through the years, so let's give it a deep view...

👉 Line-up evolution (names are from left to right on each pic)

1997 Line-up:

Joe Nixon (21) - Drums
Ryan Kepke (14) - Vocals
Jackson Mould (20) - Guitar
Jeremiah Brown (19) - Bass

 1998-1999 Line-up:

Jeremiah Brown - Bass
Joe Nixon - Drums
Jackson Mould - Guitar
Ryan Kepke - Vocals
Dale Yob - Guitar

1999 Line-up:

Greg Togawa - Guitar
Joe Nixon - Drums
Ryan Kepke - Vocals
Dale Yob - Guitar
Jeremiah Brown - Bass

2000-2002 Line-up:

Jeremiah Brown - Bass
Joe Nixon - Drums
Greg Togawa - Guitar
Ryan Kepke - Vocals

2003-2004 Line-up:

Kevin Clark - Bass
Joe Nixon - Drums
Ryan Kepke - Vocals
David Stoltenberg - Guitar
Jonah Peterson - Guitar

2015-Present Line-up:

Jackson Mould (41) - Guitar
Ryan Kepke (35) - Vocals
Joe Nixon (42) - Drums
Jeremiah Brown (40) - Bass
*Jonah Peterson - Extra Guitar (at some shows)
*Jordan Mould - Extra Guitar (at some shows)

👉 All releases, all presses and nerdery

Demo Tape #1 (199x)

As you've noticed, they were called "Slik Shoes" before "Slick Shoes".
Slik Shoes was a three-piece band in 1995-1996, so Jackson is the main singer on those recordings.

I don't know the exact release date and which songs are on this demo. Maybe early versions of "Silence" and "I Guess"?...

Demo Tape #2 (1996)
This 2nd demo has 3 songs with Jackson still on vocals: "
Five O Grind", "My So Called Real World" and "151". Supposedly, they showed that demo to Tooth & Nail Records and they signed them up to record their first self-titled EP.

Slick Shoes EP (January 21th, 1997)
First 4-song EP with Ryan on vocals and their very first release on Tooth & Nail Records. All their following full-length albums (except Far From Nowhere) were released on Tooth & Nail.
This mini-album was pressed on 7" blue vinyl (some clearer, some  darker), 7" black vinyl and CD.

Rusty (June 17th, 1997)
Rusty was their debut full-length. 16 songs of pure gold in my opinion. Much people compare it with "MxPx - Life In General" for their "super fast/poppy" sound. I also think that Rusty has a big influence from Life In General but with an unique-cool touch.
This album was pressed on 12" Coke bottle clear vinyl, 12" black vinyl, CD and cassette.
There's also a promo version, where "Fall" song is called "I Suck".
Burn Out (July 7th, 1998)
Burn Out followed the same line of Rusty, but with a very more "mature/melancholic" sound, which I love. 1997-1998 were the best Slick Shoes era, in my opinion. Jackson was/is a genius on guitar.
This record was released only on CD and cassette.
There's also a promo version, which differences to the original one, because it has all songs names printed on the CD.

Wake Up Screaming (May 20th, 2000)
Wake Up Screaming has a "slower/more melodic" sound than their previous releases, but really catchy songs.
Since this album, all their following records were edited only on CD.
There are two presses with color variations. First press: CDs have red stamp. Second press: CDs have light-blue stamp.
Also exists a two-song sampler cassette with the singles "Angel" and "Have I Said Too Much?".

Split w/ Cooter (May 23th, 2000)

This 4/4-song split was their only release on Fueled By Ramen.
There are two presses with text variations. First press: it says "Slick Shoes & Cooter" on front cover. Second press: it just changed the name "Cooter" to "Autopilot Off".

Slick Shoes (April 9th, 2002)
In this record, the band shows us a "well-defined/solid" pop punk style. My favorite from Greg Togawa era.
There are two CD versions of it. Tooth & Nail digipack version, and a Japanese version on jewel case with OBI strip (no bonus track on that edition). There's also a promo version, with a picture of the band as front cover, and also a one-song CD of "Alone" single.
Far From Nowhere (July 8th, 2003)
I think Slick Shoes became bigger with this release. Really good one, but very different than all previous stuff. Only two former members on it (Ryan and Joe).

There are two CD editions of it. SideOneDummy Records edition, and a Japanese edition of Bullion Records with OBI strip, which includes a bonus cover of Dramarama's song "Anything Anything (I'll Give You)" and a small sticker of band's logo.

The Biggest & The Best (November 18th, 2003)
This one is a compilation album of Slick Shoes discography. The three first tracks "Pretend To Be The Same", "Ruled Out" and "Spleen Puncher" are unreleased songs. This "best of" does not include any Far From Nowhere song on it.
Only one CD press was published through Tooth & Nail Records.
That's all about official releases.

👉 More singles, covers and

"151" song, which originally appears on 1996 Demo Tape #2 was re-recorded  for 2002 s/t album.
"I Guess" song, which originally appears on 1997 s/t EP was re-recorded in a slower version for Wake Up Screaming album.
song, which originally appears on 1997 s/t EP has an alternate version which appears as hidden track behind "Learn To Unlearn", the last song of Burn Out album.
The song "Clenched Fists, Black Eyes", track 11 of
Burn Out album is a 7 Seconds cover.
"Hope Against Hope" song, which originally appears on their split w/ Cooter was re-recorded  for Far From Nowhere album.
They recorded a cover of Mandy Moore's song "Candy" which is the track 02 of "Punk Goes Pop" compilation released on April 3th, 2002 via Fearless Records.
The song "Once Again" has a demo version which is the track 08 of "Atticus ...Dragging The Lake.II" compilation released on March 17th, 2003 via SideOneDummy Records.
On August 28th, 2004, they shared a random track called "Blackout" which was on streaming via PureVolume and MySpace.

In a 1999's interview Jeremiah said: "We're doing a split EP with Joy Electric in which they cover some of our songs and we cover a couple of their songs. We're also recording The Cure's "Close To Me," and Metallica's "Battery". We're also covering a Keith Green song".

I researched about it and discovered that Joy Electric is an electropop/synthpop band from CA active since 1994. I'm pretty sure that split was cancelled and those covers never saw the light either.

In 1999 Jackson Mould left the band. He was already married with Kelly Kepke (Ryan's big sister). Jackson argued that he just wanted to pursue family life, be a husband and work, because he had a pretty good job. Shortly after, the band met Greg Togawa at a local show, and he became in Jackson's replacement.

By the way, Joe Nixon was also married with Harmony Mould (Jackson's sister).

On January 15th, 2004, Slick Shoes announced on their webpage that bassist Kevin Clark and drummer Joe Nixon have been removed from the band: "Some members felt they didn’t want to continue working to become what we know. Slick Shoes has the potential to be and other members we decided just didn’t fit with us. There are no hard feelings held for any of the past members of Slick Shoes... that’s just the way it happens sometimes. We wish Kevin and Joe the best of luck with whatever projects they decide to pursue next".

The band replaced them with Josh Kleven on bass and Bill Lanz on drums. Never saw a picture or some live footage with that line-up.

On October 7th, 2006 the band issued a statement through their MySpace page saying that they had begun a side project called Sigmund, and that Slick Shoes was on an "indefinite hiatus".
Sigmund was more into a "post hardcore/indie/
alternative" genre. They only had a 6-song self-titled EP while they were active. You can download it right here.

Finally, I'd say that Slick Shoes made a trade mark of their style. I really think that without Rusty or Burn Out, bands such as Sick Of Change, Greenroom or Broken Cedars never would've sounded so good. I hope they keep on influencing new waves of skatepunk bands forever!

All ripped in MP3 V0 format from my orginal CDs. You find it just here on Screaming Fastcore.
P.S. If anyone owns a physical copy or has more info about demo tapes, please contact me. Thanks!
- Mario.

BeerBong - Future Behind Us (Review)

So long time ago between in the middle of the 90’s the conventional punk rock suffers a conventional modifications into experimental shapes transforming the classic punk rock in more mature musical shapes, from this new kind of modifications, grow up subgenres as melodic hardcore and the most purest technical subgenre known until these days, the glorious fast melodic hardcore. A specific history that I told you take place in some local suburbs from Gurizia Italy, so we can see that italian fast melodic hardcore takes their purest origins in the north of Italy with BeerBong, one of the first melodic punk rock bands that takes the punk rock to a new musical and dedicated levels.
BeerBong releases their first two homemade works in the middle of the 90’s with the genre in his purest young shape: Banfi’s Law (1996) and Crash (1997), two years later the first large production comes out with the natural and more defined own style of BeerBong with Fast and Comfortable (1999), the end of the first phase of BeerBong comes to the end with an EP Business Called Fun (2001) after that two new members join the band: Lorenzo Zangheri (main vocalist) and Federico Tanzi (guitars), with the enter into the stage by Lorenzo turns the old vocals style of BeerBong into a new one, but the instrumental and musical shapes except the vocals of the band still be the same with more technically and more faster than ever before.
With this new era comes with two new and awesome albums: BeerBong (2004) and Murder Party (2006) both large productions albums (LP), after that last album a few years later the band split up and every member takes his own ways, but the legends turn back from the ashes some time, and BeerBong announced the last year that they come back with their old vocalist Simone Zuin, and that they are working in new music: Future Behind (2018) the second EP released this year featured by 7 new songs.

Feed Forward
The intro song starts with a short instrumental with perfect drums and awesome guitars after that the typical speed and technique of BeerBong rises again since their last album with the old vocalist, the great breakdown of the drums gives to the song another different musical senses.

Shocking Wave
A new singularity of musical art makes this one song awesome, with the unique old style of BeerBong comes with Shocking Wave, with a nice repeat formula in the riff guitars with the drums, with short lyrics in this particular song make it from the start to the end more enjoyable and funny.

Future Behind Us
The start of the slope in the EP starts here and add that isn’t the strongest song particularly when it has the name of the whole EP and has the longest duration that any other song in the EP, it seems like a down in the performance quality that another thing after two great past songs so Future Behind Us don’t get that it gets with Feed Forward o Shocking Wave.

You Might!
If Future Behind Us starts to decrease the quality in the whole EP it seems with You Might the that quality don’t grow up and maintain the same level that Future Behind Us, nice song after all but sounds a little forced in the vocals performance in the most top moments in the song.

One More Chance
Trying to revive the awesome level of the first two songs One More Chance stays too close to reach the goal maybe the good point to save in this case is the song is more catchy and has the same level of speed of the first three songs too close with Future Behind Us song that the first two songs

Mental Emptiness
The second song with most length in the EP and seems that the quality of the EP down in the worst level something that start to appear since the song Future Behind Us, the only nice in this song is the end with a great riff solo that it has.

Straight No Chaser
Straight No Chaser begins with a unknown how good or bad going to be this song with a uncertain intro of the song the doubts stars to fill our brains, but it excepts likes the final song always be so fucking good to finally reach the quality of the two first songs, similar in the ultra speed and the technical performance of the song that appears in Murder Party album titled Open Season.

Conclusion: Future Behind Us is the spiritual successor of the last EP curiously with the same vocalist Business Called Fun with awesome two initial songs and for bad a down in the quality in the consequent songs with a partial rise like the initial quality with the last song. Too many things seems that don’t come back as the initial original BeerBong all of it is part of the evolution of the band but maintain the most essential unique and awesome style in this new EP.

Final Score: ★★★✩✩

Aimless Again - 2020 Future Punks (Review)

Punk Rock from Port Jefferson, New York. Aimless Again has to be one of the most dedicated bands I've seen, these guys have been working together since they were in middle school! They have been at this for a while.

Intro / Shredder
What a great way to start this album off, this song will hit you with nostalgia, as when I hear it I think of 90s skatepunk bands. It is an extremely catchy song and it is already stuck in my head. Awesome opener track, I like the way the intro cuts right into the second track.

This is the third track on the record, this song is just as nostalgic as the first when it comes time to sounding like 90s skatepunk, only 3 tracks in and this album is already one of my favorites, the lyrics in this song as sung greatly, and are kinda relatable, which is great.

My Mistake
A calm track in comparison to the others so far, which I love when bands have variety sound wise. This is another song people would possibly relate to, a lot of emotion went into this track which is obvious, you can hear it and that is awesome! This is an amazing record.

Interlude / Turn & Run
This song kind of reminds me of NOFX during the opening riff. I usually say this is in my reviews a lot and it is one of my guidelines when I review stuff, this sounds like something from a Tony Hawk soundtrack, and it is true. I love songs that remind me of my childhood, this song does a great job doing that!

This song has the perfect amount of melody, amazing instrumental work as well, this band works so well together, so much chemistry. and for that amazing teamwork we get one of the best skatepunk records to come out of New York.

Opening with a slower intro, this song is probably my favorite song on the album, although it is pretty hard to determine a "favorite" track on this record. I have not had anything negative to say about this album so far. It has impressed me with every track.

Here we are, the second to last track on the album, throughout this record my opinion has not changed, straight up goodness and that is definitely the case here, another great punk rock song, even futher cementing this as an amazing record.

Outro / 7 Lonely Days
As a closer for the record this is both an outro track, as well as a 6 and a half minute song. Both serve as great outros but 7 Lonely Days is pretty much the grand finale to a dope record, a lot of hard work went into this album and it definitely has not gone unnoticed.

Conclusion: As I said multiple times in the review, this is a great record. A really early candidate for the Top 10 list of the best albums of 2018. These dudes did an amazing track on creating this record! I can't wait for everyone to hear it.

Torches - New Ways, Same Fire (Review)

Torches (Hardcore Punk from Spain) released their latest album "New Ways, Same Fire" in late 2017. It is a very solid record, these guys did a great job at creating something original. They're definitely doing an awesome job representing their native country in the global punk scene.

Opening up this album, "Void" is an awesome track. Right off the bat we get a taste of what is to come, these guys give true meaning to the term "Melodic Hardcore" with this song (and the whole album for that matter. "Void" started off the record on a high note.

Into The Fire
The second track of an album is just as important to the overall opinion of a record as the first, and this song does not disappoint. The sound of this song leans more towards the typical "punk" sound, which is never a bad thing. So far, so good.

The Rose Of Fire
Continuing on with the album, we come to track number three, a track that details the decline of the community (that is the impression I got based on the lyrics). I love the message of this song, it is strong but simple, which is great.

This album has not let me down yet, and I don't expect it to! I love songs that tell stories much like this one does. It is a very deep track and the lyrics reflect that fact. It is accompanied by a great instrumental track to cap it all off.

New Ways
This song gives me the impression that is about starting over new void of other people's unnecessary drama and what comes along with said drama, it should be relatable to pretty much everyone because it is common to have a drama wrapped person in their life that they can definitely life without.

Narrow Views
This song goes out to anyone who is close minded to new ideas or music etc. From what I took from this song I can conclude that when you have a closed mind you can be missing out on something that may be your favorite thing in the world, maybe even something that could potentially change your life.

The Good War
Here we are, my favorite track on the album, both instrumentally and lyrically. Despite all the messages on this album the message from this track maybe the strongest. It tells us about the only war that is worth fighting, and that war is for your freedom, strong words from the band on this one. Easily my favorite track.

Fallen Friend
Throughout my rather short life I have been lucky enough to not have a friend of mine die. I can gurantee that there is nothing good about losing a good friend. You can hear the emotion in the music on this track. It is a touchy subject and it handled well by the band for this song.

The Things We Leave Behind
Being the last track on the album, it definitely does not disappoint. As it is a complete opposite from the last song which is about losing a friend to an unfortunate circumstance, this song however is about cutting off a shitty friend for personal benefit, that point is made clear by the passionate lyrics.
Without a doubt a great way to close a tight record.

Conclusion: Torches blew me away on this album, doing this review was really due to the fact that I was trying to figure out the message of each song (which I hope I did correctly). Awesome record, kudos to the band.

Final Score: ★★★★✩

Sunsgrind (Full Discography)

Sunsgrind was a super fast and technical skatepunk act from Kanto, Japan formed in 2001.
Personally, these guys are my favorite japanese band, because their music mixes perfectly full-throttle drumming with awesome octave riffing and lots of emotive guitar progressions.
If you take a look on their MySpace profile you'll see Rufio and Sick Of Change on their Top as main influences. That explains why their sound is so good to me.

Well, many people were asking me to share Sunsgrind's full discography on the blog, so here it is. All ripped in MP3 V0 format from the orginal CDs. You find it just here on Screaming Fastcore.

Sunsgrind & Child Lock - Split (2002)
Sunsgrind - Misdirection (2004)
Sunsgrind - Far From A Precipice (2005)

Symphony Of Distraction - Horse (Review)

Californian skate punkers Symphony of Distraction are back with their latest release "Horse", this being their first release since 2014, they had a really good 2014 releasing a full length album titled "Call it Off, John" and putting out a cover of Bracket's "2RAK005" for the compilation album for the Fat Wreck Chords documentary "A Fat Wreck".

Once And Future
Right off the bat we have a true skate punk track, at certain points in the song I am reminded of Bodyjar circa 2001. I love when albums start off on the right foot with a energetic track that gets you stoked for what the rest of the album has to offer.

I Wish I Wasn't
Hands down my favorite track on this album, this song reminds me of playing Tony Hawk games for hours. Anything description other than "great" would be an understatement when talking about this song. Any skate punk fan would love this track, it is everything skate punk should be.

Lyrically, this is one of my favorite tracks, so many quotable lyrics. One of my favorite lines is "trap us like quicksand..". I love the amount of melody that they put into this track, I don't have a single complaint about this album so far, and I don't think I will, I can tell a lot of hard work went into this record and it truly shows.

Rain Check
This song is so relatable, it is about someone who no matter how hard you try just won't give you the time of day which has happened to me multiple times as I'm sure it has happened to many others. Lyrics like "how about a rain check? or how about a no?". It is too relatable, hits close to home, but it is the sad truth that some people just don't want to be friends.

United Failure
Unlike the last track, I can't relate too much considering I haven't hit that part of my life yet. But the message is loud and clear, it is about settling with what you have in your life and being comfortable with whatever that is, or at least that is what I thought of the song.

Don't Try
Opening with a slow, calm prelude this song is about how everything is a "joke" and a "lie" and that no matter what you do you'll stay broke and than eventually you'll die, which for most of us that is how things will end up.

Another track with a darker message this song has lyrics like "I don't care if the sun don't shine". I don't mind songs with dark or negative messages, because for one we all know how it feels to be negative and second, a good way to release your negative vibes is to let them out in a constructive way such as music.

Legacy W Quote
Back to good ol' skate punk, this song is another great example of pure skate punk, and to me there is no other better sound, skate punk is the best in my opinion and nothing beats a solid skate punk track such as this one. Great stuff on this record!

Uncomfortable Shoes
I can't be 100% but I believe the "shoes" are a metaphor for things you are uncomfortable doing in life, but you do them anyway because you have to. As I said I can't be 100% with the tracks meaning because it isn't too obvious but I just assumed, it seems like the shoes are a metaphor.

Throw It All Away
The drum work on this track is awesome, extremely fast, every member of the band is really on par with this track, as well as the rest of the album, another track where the lyrics are my favorite part, especially the line "I could see you, but my eyes are too wide" brilliant writing!

You're Not Crazy
Melodic vocals throughout, great instrumental work, and a simple message "you're not crazy, you're just sad". Amazing track. In the lyrics I can make out that some people will say horrible things just to put you down, but when you think about it they're not mean, they're simply unhappy with themselves.

Piece Of Shit
Looking back on things you used to say and do can be hard especailly when you did things that you thought were cool back then, but now when you look back on it you just face palm, this track explains that perfectly.

Too Old For Drugs
This song starts off on the slower side, giving us one of our last songs for this record. I believe this song is about when doing drugs is no longer fun and you realize all that has happened because of said drugs. Everyone grows up at some point, certain things don't have the same appeal that they used to.

This is the second to last track on the record, it is also the shortest, it is a short song about not to deal with what everyday life has to offer you. Other than there isn't much to say about this track. It clocks in at under 30 seconds!

Going Home
Here we are, the last track on the record and honestly while writing this I did not want this album to end, it was really solid from start to finish. Major summer vibes in this song due in part to the line "the sun's getting brighter, the day's getting longer". I love it.
Conclusion: This is a solid record, it was a pleasure to review this album. From start to finsh it was great. It was well worth the 4 year wait. Symphony of Distraction did an outstanding job. Great work guys!

Final Score: ★★★★★
